Participants begin by learning the foundations of horse safety and interaction, including:

  • Safe approach and handling 
  • Building trust and confidence around horses 
  • Basic ranch and barn safety

Participants gain hands-on experience with the daily care of horses, including:

  • Grooming 
  • Feeding and watering 
  • Basic health observation 
  • Picking hooves 
  • Understanding tack and equipment 
  • Saddling and bridling

Before getting in the saddle, participants learn how to work with the horse from the ground, including:

  • Leading 
  • Stopping and turning 
  • Ground manners 
  • Developing communication and confidence

Phase 4: Riding Foundations

Graduation Goal: From Trials to Trails

Once participants demonstrate readiness, they begin mounted instruction focused on:

  • Safe mounting and dismounting 
  • Balance and posture 
  • Basic riding cues 
  • Steering and stopping 
  • Building comfort and confidence in the saddle 


Phase 5: Trail Readiness

Graduation Goal: From Trials to Trails

 As participants progress, they begin preparing for off-ranch riding by learning:

  • Trail safety and etiquette 
  • Riding in varied environments 
  • Obstacle navigation 
  • Group riding awareness 
  • Building independence and confidence outside the arena or ranch setting

Graduation Goal: From Trials to Trails

 Program participants graduate when they demonstrate the knowledge, safety awareness, and riding ability needed to participate in a guided trail ride at one of our local state parks. Graduation represents not only horsemanship skill, but also personal growth, perseverance, and confidence earned along the way.
